  • Al Ahli president Abdullah Al Naboodah has poured cold water on the club’s chances of luring Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero to the UAE this summer.

Del Piero, 37, will bring the curtain down on his 19 year stay with his beloved Juve after this weeken’d Coppa Italia final against Napoli, but has stated he has no intention of hanging up his boots just yet.

Clubs in the US have been linked with the veteran forward, who enjoyed a dream end to his Serie A career last week, scoring in Juve’s 3-1 win over Atalanta to preserve their unbeaten season before lifting a sixth Scudetto.

On a recent trip to Dubai, Del Piero hinted he could follow in the footsteps of Fabio Cannavaro, who spent one year with Ahli before hanging up his boots in 2011, and head for the Emirates.

“I have been determined to follow the local football,” he told Sport360°. “I have friends who live here like Cannavaro and get information from him, I know more about UAE football than you expect.

“Cannavaro is a monopoly here as far as Italy is concerned so I’d have to talk to him to see if I could come in the future. I have no preference for what I do when I finish my career.”

However, Ahli chief Nabooda has echoed earlier comments made by Cannavaro that it would be “difficult” to sign the former Italy international, and said it is unlikely he will be heading for the Rashid Stadium.

“I don’t think so,” came his short response when asked if Ahli would renew their interest in Del Piero.
