  • Bayern  Munich are set to step up their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez after sporting director Mattias Sammer hinted the club are ready to spend big ahead of the new season.

The Bavarian giants have already been busy in the transfer market this season, bringing in no fewer than seven new faces in at the Allianz Arena including Swiss starlet Xherdan Shaqiri and Croatia’s Euro 2012 star Mario Mandzukic.

But boss Jupp Heynckes remains keen on bolstering his midfield as he attempts to wrestle the Bundesliga crown from Borussia Dortmund next season and has made no secret of his admiration for Martinez.

Bilbao have stressed that Martinez, such a key performer for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season, is going nowhere unless a club matches his €40million release clause.

Martinez, a member of Spain’s victorious Euro 2012 squad, has also been linked with Barcelona whose new boss Tito Vilanova has admitted to looking for defensive reinforcements.

Bayern, thoughm could be ready to gazump them in the race to sign 23-year-old Martinez, as Sammer admits the club could be ready to spend “crazy” to ensure they are competitive next season.

“Right now, we’re not doing it because it’s crazy,” Sammer mused to Kicker. “But if we want to do things on the pitch, then we must be crazy.”
