However, with Everton in no mood to seel the England full-back, Ferguson caught many off-guard when it emerged on Sunday evening that he was closing in on a deal for Buttner, who was close to joining Southampton earlier this summer.
The 23-year-old made 119 appearances for Vitesse Arnhem over the past four years after coming through Ajax’s youth academy and was included in Holland’s preliminary squad for Euro 2012.
Buttner will compete with Patrice Evra for the left-back slot and Ferguson is looking forward to seeing the competition between the pair.
Ferguson said: “Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we’re delighted to sign him. He’s someone we’ve been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position.”
Aside from Southampton, Buttner had also been linked with several clubs in England and Germany, but the young defender is ecstatic at being given the opportunity to play for a club of the stature of United.
“Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life,” Buttner said. “It’s a team I have admired for many years now and I can’t wait to join my teammates and play my part in helping the club be successful.”
