  • After finally completing the capture of Emmanuel Adebayor yesterday, Tottenham are set to begin a late transfer frenzy and are reported to be close to signing Shaktar Donetsk star Willian.

Spurs were expected to be extremely active during this summer’s transfer window following the sacking of Harry Redknapp and appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as manager at White Hart Lane. However, after buying Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen during the first two weeks of July, Tottenham made no new signings until their purchase of Adebayor.

With the Luka Modric transfer saga still to be resolved, Villas-Boas has been limited in his transfer options. Now that progress appears to be being made with potential buyer’s Real Madrid, a flurry of transfer activity could be about to begin.

Willian is the latest player to be linked with Spurs and Villas-Boas was keen on the Brazilian, able to play as a winger or attacking midfielder, while he was head coach at Chelsea. Earlier in the summer, new Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo made an offer for Willian and the 24-year-old was unhappy to find out Shaktar had rejected the bid.

“I don’t know what the coach said, but the correct value is €25million (£19.5million),” Willian told Globo Esporte.

“Regardless of the price, it is clear that the desire is great to play at a club like Chelsea, the champion of the Champions League.

“I’m really upset with the board for not letting me leave. It would be good for me and also for the club.

“I’d be in a big city and have the chance to grow professionally. This is not a message to anyone, everyone knows I want to leave.”

With Tottenham wanting to add more attacking options to their squad, Willian has been identified as a potential target and they are preparing a £20million for the former Corinthians player. The Brazilian is likely to be open to the move and Spurs are confident of bringing Willian to England.

As players move to Tottenham, several appear to be on their way out of White Hart Lane. Sebastian Bassong completed a transfer to Norwich City yesterday while Spurs are bracing themselves for a £7million bid from Queen’s Park Rangers for Michael Dawson.
