    Here are the big ones you need to know about…

    ENGLAND

    Manchester City’s Roberto Mancini and Tottenham’s Andre Villas Boas were the busiest managers on transfer deadline day in the Premier League.

    Champions City strengthened their numbers by completing the £6.25 million (Dh36.4m) signing of Swansea winger Scott Sinclair, securing a £3.1m (Dh18m) deal for Inter defender Maicon, the free transfer of goalkeeper Richard Wright and a deal worth £12m (Dh69.9m) for Fiorentina centre-half Matija Nastasic.

    The title favourites also added Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia to their ranks as the Spanish international flew into Manchester last night to put the finishing touches to a £16m move.

    Spurs confirmed a £10m (Dh55.4m) deal for France international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and hijacked Clint Dempsey’s move to Liverpool after their club-record £20m (Dh116.4m) offer for Porto’s Joao Moutinho collapsed over personal terms.

    The fee for Lloris which could rise to £12m (Dh69.3m) – and Lyon side also say they are entitled to 20 per cent of profit should he leave White Hart Lane.

    The deal had looked to be in doubt earlier in the day after the Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas accused Spurs chairman Daniel Levy of moving the goalposts and said negotiations were the hardest of his 25 years at the top.

    Aulas said: “We have had people speaking all night with Daniel Levy. He talks a lot and goes back on what we’ve agreed in writing. Agreements have not at all been respected. We’ve done what we can. Hugo has been troubled by the difficulty in these negotiations.”

    Dempsey was believed to be on his way to Liverpool but the Reds had two bids turned down for the American midfielder. Liverpool also offered Fulham Charlie Adam, who eventually joined Stoke, and Jordan Henderson in exchange but both midfielders rejected a move to west London.

    Spurs swiftly agreed personal terms and Dempsey underwent a medical at Spurs Lodge with two hours remaining before the deadline shut.

    Elsewhere, Southampton smashed their club-record transfer fee by signing Gaston Ramirez from Bologna for £12m (Dh69.9m). Ramirez, 21, was a transfer target for Liverpool and Tottenham earlier in the window.

    Everton completed the signing of Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee while also adding teenage winger Matthew Kennedy from Kilmarnock.

    Costa Rican Oviedo has been a regular starter for Copenhagen after joining from Deportivo Saprissa in his homeland. The 22-year-old can operate at left-back and on the left side of midfield.

    Fulham confirmed the signing of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United on a two-year deal and Kieran Richardson on a three-year deal from Sunderland.

    The 31-year-old striker has moved for an undisclosed fee and will be reunited with Martin Jol, who managed Tottenham during the Bulgarian’s time at the north London club. B

    erbatov, who scored 56 goals and made 149 appearances for Manchester United, said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Fulham and I look forward to playing under Martin Jol once again.

    “As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. “I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome.”

    SPAIN

    Jose Mourinho concludeD a deal to bring Michael Essien to the Bernabeu on a season-long loan after selling Lassana Diarra to Anzhi Makhachkala.

    Essien was left out of Chelsea’s European Super Cup squad last night with Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo admitting the Ghanaian could was headed for a loan.

    Russian club Anzhi agreed a fee in the region of €8m (Dh36.9m) for Diarra who has made 117 appearances for Los Merengues.

    Elsewhere, Malaga boosted their strikeforce with the acquisition of Roque Santa Cruz on loan from Manchester City and Argentine striker Javier Saviola from Benfica.

    Manuel Pellegrini was also confident a deal for Sporting Lisbon defender Onguchi Oneyewu could be concluded with the American international last night undergoing a medical at La Rosaleda.

    Al Ain-target Park Chu-young joined Celta Vigo on loan from Arsenal while Mallorca signed Mexican international Giovani Dos Santos from Tottenham on a four-year deal.

    ITALY

    Juventus finally signed a striker but club CEO Giuseppe Marotta admitted Nicklas Bendtner, who joined on loan from Arsenal, was not the star name they had hoped for.

    The Bianconeri had been linked with Robin van Persie, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Llorente and Dimitar Berbatov throughout the summer. Marotta said: “Bendtner is not the high-profile striker we were hoping to sign, but it’s a chance we had to take in a difficult market like this.”

    Nigel de Jong completed his move to AC Milan, signing a three-year contract from Manchester City.

    Cavani, meanwhile, signed a new five-year contract in theatrical fashion with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis joking the Uruguayan had signed for City.

    Other men on the move in Italy where mainly strikers with Marco Borriello, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino all joining new clubs. Borriello signed for Genoa, Toni re-joined Fiorentina while Gilardino made Bologna the seventh Italian club of his career.

    FRANCE

    Gregory van der Wiel was expected to become Paris Saint Germain’s final big money buy of the summer after flying into the French capital for talks.

    The 24-year-old’s agent Mino Raiola has revealed a deal had been agreed with PSG expected to pay around €15m (Dh277m) for the Ajax right-back with the transfer window in France not closing until Tuesday.

    “The clubs have reached an agreement. We will try to complete the transfer,” Raiola said. “It is 80 per cent done but there are some important details to finish. We are still talking about the duration of his contract.”

    PSG have already spent in excess of €120m this window on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lucas Moura and Marco Verratti.

    Elsewhere Marseille signed 25-year-old full-back Kassim Abdallah from Sedan. Lille also delved into Ligue 2 for some up-and-coming talent with Le Harve striker Ryan Mendes, 21, undergoing a medical.

    GERMANY

    Rafael van der Vaart said he felt “like I am coming home” after rejoining Hamburg from Tottenham for a fee of around €13m (Dh60m).

    The Dutch midfielder played for the Bundesliga club between 2005 and 2008, scoring 48 goals in 113 games before moving on to Real Madrid, and then to the Premier League.

    After penning a three-year contract with Hamburg on transfer deadline day, van der Vaart said it was great to be back. “It feels a bit like I am coming back home,” he said.

    “Everybody knows that I still have a strong bond with Hamburg and it is a compliment when a club wants you every year. This season was the right time.”

    Elsewhere in the Bundesliga Schalke signed Netherlands international winger Ibrahim Afellay from Barcelona on loan. Afellay, 26, will play under coach Huub Stevens – who knows the winger from their time together at PSV Eindhoven.
