  • Strong AGL record: Jo.

The imminent closure of the winter transfer market saw the Arabian Gulf League clubs spring back into life on Sunday night, with Brazil striker Jo the highest-profile casualty.

Jo, 28, was ditched by Al Shabab ahead of the window shutting at 17:00 on Monday just six months after a move from Atletico Mineiro. Countryman Juninho Potiguar, 25, is his replacement in the four-player foreign quota, with him snapped up on a five-month loan deal with a view to buy from Moldova’s Sheriff Tiraspol.

“Juninho used to play with (Shabab star) Henrique Luvannor at Sheriff,” a senior Hawks source said. “He is a right winger with speed. “He is here on loan with the possibility to buy.”

Juninho has registered 20 goals in 39 top-flight matches since he joined Sheriff in January 2014, helping them lift the Moldovan National Division crown during his debut campaign.

The evening was an uncomfortable one for Brazilian target men as Al Wasl also ditched Edgar Bruno, 29, for Kuwait SC forward Rogerinho on another temporary deal until the end of 2015-16.

The Bacabal-born schemer has scored an impressive 43 goals in 77 VIVA Premier League games and lifted the Saudi Super Cup while leant to Al Shabab Riyadh last term.

“Al Wasl have hired Brazilian Rogerinho from Kuwait SC,” the Cheetahs tweeted. “The player is 28-years-old and has played for several Brazilian clubs, such as Atletico Paranaense, and Al Shabab Riyadh.”

The decisions to dispense with Jo and Edgar come after both registered solid starts to the campaign. Jo struck eight goals in 13 AGL appearances and is the top scorer in the Arabian Gulf Cup with eight, while ex-Shabab man Edgar struck seven times in the same number of games since he was drafted in as a summer replacement for Ederson on a two-year deal.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at champions Al Ain, the latter-mentioned player seemed unaware of what was to come.

Edgar said: “I know I am not playing so good. We are not machines – we have good and bad moments – and I work to change this situation and continue to help the team.”

Meanwhile, unwanted Al Dhafra forward David Barral has returned to La Liga after he joined relegation-threatened Granada on a contract until June 2017. Great things had been expected of the 32-year-old summer recruit, but the Real Madrid youth product struck just three times in 10 AGL matches. He was ditched by new boss Mohammed Kwid this month and has been granted a free transfer.

“I am desiring to reach Granada,” he tweeted. “I am content and possess great enthusiasm to start training with the team.”
