Hot-shot Ali Mabkhout is concentrating purely on reviving Al Jazira rather than firing his way to the golden boot.

Mabkhout, 25, has lashed in a superb 19 goals this term to sit four behind Al Wahda striker Sebastian Tagliabue with two matches left in the Arabian Gulf League.

A trip to relegation-threatened Emirates Club today offers a great chance to add to his haul. But the UAE star is focusing on getting the fallen giants back to winning ways.

He said: “Winning the title of top scorer would be a great achievement and a source of pride for any striker, but I’m not looking at this right now. I’m far more interested in helping my team to win.”

Meanwhile, Al Wasl boss Gabriel Calderon is not giving up on his AFC Champions League ambitions.

The Cheetahs’ 3-0 loss to rivals Al Wahda last week saw them lose key ground in the race to finish in the top three and guarantee a spot in next year’s competition

“To maintain our chances we have no choice but to win,” the Argentine said of Thursday’s match against Dibba Al Fujairah.

Al Dhafra are looking to rewrite the record books when they host Al Shabab on Friday. A best-ever finish of sixth is in their sights, thanks to a seven-match unbeaten streak.

“This generation of players are trying to make history,” said defender Saif Mohammed. “I am confident in our ability to get the best result against Al Shabab.”
