  • The Boss: Gyan (l) was at his lethal best to fire Al Ain to victory.

Asamoah Gyan's stylish second-half brace saw Al Ain come from a goal down to breeze past UAE rivals Al Jazira into the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League.

The 28-year-old was at his lethal best at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, producing two trademark sidefooted finishes to secure a repeat of the Garden City club's 2-1 triumph from the first leg.

Jazira had started the brighter against an Al Ain side made docile by the two away goals struck in the capital, gaining a morale-boosting breakthrough when rampaging left-back Abdulla Mousa's deflected cross spun kindly to Ali Mabkhout to put them ahead on the night after 17 minutes.

A game of few chances came to life after the break, with visiting midfielder Khamis Esmaeel lucky not to receive his marching orders before the lethal Asamoah Gyan moved the tie beyond them.

The capital side sunk in the final stages, with Al Ain looking like the team in pursuit of two goals to proceed as they buzzed around the Hazza bin Zayed with impunity.

Al Ain can now look forward to August's last-eight tie, while the doubts around Jazira coach Walter Zenga's position will now intensify.

Knowing his side had it all to do after conceding two goals at Mohammed bin Zayed, the Italian unleashed the shackles around his visiting side. He was rewarded for his nuanced 4-3-1-2 formation, Jazira dominating possession and boasting an ever-present attacking threat with twin frontmen Mabkhout and Felipe Caicedo.

It was the former who rose the bench to their feet, wheeling away in celebration with his fist in the air after smashing in on the goal line to imbue his club with belief after Mousa was allowed to advance unchecked.

The tables were turned after the break as the Boss finally began to exert control against their all-action visitors, who were wilting in the 35C evening heat.

It was now only a matter of time until the hosts broke through, with Gyan finally placing home from inside the penalty box after being played in by the influential Mohamed Abdulrahman.

An unlikely comeback was made close to impossible when Gyan replicated the same technique to effortlessly slot in, following a selfless pass from Diaky.

A boisterous Hazza crowd then cheered their team home, with coach Zlatko Dalic joyously embracing his coaching staff on the final whistle as Al Ain celebrated entry into the last eight at their neighbour's expense.
