  • Silver send-off: Mirel Radoi lifts the cup.

Al Ain “saved” their season with victory over Al Ahli at Zayed Sports City while giving two of their foreign stars a fitting send-off.

Romanian midfielder Mirel Radoi and Australian forward Alex Brosque are expected to leave the Boss this summer, with both players out of contract and no offers as yet forthcoming from the club.

Radoi, who followed his former Al Hilal coach Cosmin Olaroiu to the Garden City in the summer of 2011, will leave having won two UAE league titles as well as last night’s President’s Cup.

“We can say that we saved the season because we had a very bad campaign this year,” he said. “We had to save the season with this one final. In the end we are very happy that we could take this cup.”

On his future he added: “Of course [Al Ain] was my first option but I waited for seven months and if they didn’t make an offer, that’s not my fault.”

Brosque was handed a 12-minute cameo in the capital by coach Zlatko Dalic and was happy to be finishing his time in Al Ain on a high.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here, my two seasons, it’s sad to have to part ways but it’s football so tonight was a special way to finish.”

The Australian added that the Boss were motivated to beat the Red Knights by a desire to gain revenge for their semi-final exit at the hands of the Dubai club last season.

Ahli won 2-1 last May as Al Ain finished an ill-tempered clash with just nine men.

“The way we lost the semi-final left a bad taste and we really wanted to make up for that this year,” Brosque added.

“I think the way we progressed through each stage, Sharjah was a difficult game then Al Wasl, Al Nasr, all difficult games but I think everyone that played showed a lot of determination to get where we were. So to win it is special”
