  • On the move: Felipe Caicedo (r) joins Espanyol after a disappointing time in the UAE.

Felipe Caicedo’s unhappy spell in the UAE has come to an end after the striker signed a two-year deal with Espanyol.

Caicedo, 25, was released from his contract at Al Jazira – which still had two and a half years to run – earlier this week, allowing him to join the Spanish club on a free transfer.

“The Ecuadorian striker has signed for two seasons and will immediately link up with the first team,” read a statement on Espanyol’s website.

Having arrived in January and expected to spearhead Jazira’s push for the title, Caicedo endured a disappointing stay in Abu Dhabi, scoring just five goals in 18 appearances.

The former Manchester City man had lost his automatic place in Walter Zenga’s starting XI by the end of the season, but played in all three of Ecuador’s matches at the World Cup in Brazil, failing to score as his country were eliminated in the group stage.
