  • Denied: Caio (r) looked to have handed Wasl the win.

New Al Wasl boss Gabriel Calderon was denied a win in his first game in charge as table toppers Al Wahda continued their unbeaten start to the AGL season.

Calderon became Wasl’s tenth manager in four years last week following the sacking of Brazil World Cup winner Jorginho.

On-loan Brazilian Caio, brought into the club by Jorginho, looked to have given Calderon the perfect start as Wasl boss, after slotting home in the 69th minute.

It wasn’t to be as Amer Omar rescued a point for his side in the 83rd minute.

Things started brightly for Calderon and he would have been delighted when his side took the lead through Ederson Alves halfway through the first-half.

It was Alves’ fourth goal of the season but it took the home team just ten minutes to find an equaliser. An all too familiar occurrence for Cheetahs fans who have endured a frustrating few years with performances on the pitch inconsistent and the longevity of their coaches in the dugout becoming shorter with every appointment.

Talismanic striker Sebastian Tagliabue hauled Al Wahda level in the 35th minute with his fifth effort of the campaign so far.

A much needed boost in the form of three points looked to have handed Wasl’s way though thanks to Caio’s third goal for the club.

Omar and his Wahda team-mates had other ideas and José Peseiro’s men continue their remarkable start to the season.

The result sees Wasl move into 10th place. Wahda remain top after four wins and two draws from their opening six fixtures.
