Sharjah boss Abdulaziz Al Anbari is determined to keep bringing joy to the club’s long-suffering fans after their sensational start in the 2018/19 Arabian Gulf League continued with a 6-3 thumping of surprise strugglers Al Nasr.

The King flirted with relegation for the past four seasons prior to the decision to hand club stalwart Al Anbari, 40, the reigns on a permanent basis last October. This show of faith was rewarded with sixth place in 2017/18.

They appear poised to improve upon this fine finish after hitting 10 goals when winning their opening pair of top-flight fixtures for the first time in 12 years.

“Al Hamdullah [all praise is due to Allah] for the win and thank you to all my brother players for their efforts in these difficult conditions,” said Al Anbari, whose side went 5-0 up within 41 electrifying minutes at Khalifa bin Mohammed Stadium on Friday night.

“Al Nasr played a good game. We directed our players to exploit the spaces.

“It was impossible to predict this result, especially as Al Nasr are a rival for the title and prepared well for the season. I warned my players not to be lax in the second half, as Al Nasr had the players to bring themselves back into the game.

“The fans always inspire us, especially after the great support we received from the board of directors. We hope to rejoice with our fans this season.”

Brazilian striker Welliton struck four goals for Sharjah. Summer buys Igor Coronado and Ryan Mendes also got on the score sheet.

Their credentials will be tested on Thursday when they travel to Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club.
