The Red Knights finally resembled something like last term’s treble-winning vintage, routing the eastern emirate-outfit courtesy of goals from Ahmed Khalil, Ossama Assaidi, Everton Ribeiro and Luis Jimenez to move up to sixth.

This was an exhibition of the swagger of old, the two strikes in the middle from their richly-acquired new boys a potential sign of better days to come.

The hosts went in front at Rashid Stadium in the 38th minute, UAE forward Khalil heading home.

Assaidi soon doubled the lead with a rifled shot just before the break.

Two more followed in the second half to secure a first victory in four attempts.

Brazil playmaker Ribeiro’s weak effort trickled through goalkeeper Ayyoub Al Marzouqi, skipper Jimenez adding gloss with a dinked finish.

Meanwhile, 10-man Al Shabab showed resolve to hold on for a feisty 1-1 draw at immediate challengers Al Wahda to remain third in the league table.

The Hawks went ahead at Al Nahyan Stadium in the early stages of the first half courtesy of Edgar’s fine half-volley.

Their lead was not to last though, the hosts levelling three minutes later as forward Salem Saleh headed in at the back post from a corner. Disciplinary issues then documented a testy ending.

Defender Mohammed Ayed was sent off with 10 minutes remaining for the visitors, coaches Sami Al Jaber of Wahda and Caio Junior of Shabab soon being sent to the stands.
