  • Olaroiu (r) has endured a disappointing season with Al Ahli.

Dethroned Arabian Gulf League champions Al Ahli cannot wait to bid farewell to a miserable 2014/15 campaign and embrace the challenges that lie ahead, according to boss Cosmin Olaroiu.

The seventh-placed Red Knights round out their top-flight commitments tonight with a trip to Bani Yas, though salvation could be close at hand.

A 3-2 midweek triumph against Tractor Sazi saw them through to the AFC Champions League round of 16 for the first time, and this confidence boost could see them shine when their President’s Cup challenge begins.

“I spoke with the players and told them that the season will begin after the match against Bani Yas,” Olaroiu said.

Meanwhile, under pressure Al Jazira boss Eric Gerets wants his team to remind themselves what it feels like to win prior to the President’s Cup starting.

The Pride of Abu Dhabi have to win at Al Wasl and hope Al Shabab slip up at home to Al Dhafra to secure second spot.

“The game is a crucial one,” said Gerets, after a run of three losses from five. “I hope we are cherishing the memory of a win before we begin our President’s Cup journey.”

The night’s remaining fixture sees Al Wahda host Al Nasr, with the Clarets guaranteed to finish fourth.
