  • Bafetimbi Gomis has Premier League experience with Swansea City.

Moussa Sow and Bafetimbi Gomis could add bite to Al Ahli’s toothless attack next season after the dethroned Arabian Gulf League champions made approaches for the France-born pair.

The Red Knights have been frustrated in the summer market thus far as coach Cosmin Olaroiu prepares to guide them back to the top.

A fee was agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk for Luiz Adriano last month, but the highly-rated Brazil striker rejected their overtures to sign for Italian giants AC Milan.

Ahli are now casting their net wide as they look to lure the left winger and centre forward reques-ted by the Romanian to compliment attacking midfielder Everton Ribeiro and defensive midfielder Kwon Kyung-won, who have been retained in the four-player foreign quota.

Reports yesterday in the Daily Mirror stated an initial £6 million (Dh34.3m) bid had been made to Swansea City for powerful France centre forward Gomis, a lucrative contract offer tempting him.

The 29-year-old scored seven times in 32 appearances on his debut Premier League campaign in 2014/15. The former Lyon star is among a number of players being targeted as they attempt to avoid a repeat of the last-minute collapse of four deals – the most advanced being for Newcastle United’s Papiss Cisse – at the end of the winter window.

It left inconsistent UAE international Ahmed Khalil as the only senior option up top once veteran Grafite had been sold to Qatar’s Al Sadd.

Although Khalil was able to play an influential role in the Red Knights’ historic march to next month’s AFC Champions League quarter-finals, a return of only five top-flight goals in 24 appearances contributed to a dreadful title defence which saw them finish seventh.

The lack of bite from the strikers was matched in midfield, Oussama Assaidi’s limp return following his high-profile January arrival from Liverpool seeing him set for an immediate exit.

Ahli have earmarked versatile Sow as the man to replace him on the left wing after a bid for Chile and Napoli star Eduardo Vargas hit the rocks, though the size of fee required by Fenerbahce is proving problematic.

The Turkish giants have spent lavishly on Manchester United pair Robin van Persie and Nani already this summer, meaning they are looking to recoup as much money as possible.

A figure between £15-20m (Dh60.2-80.2m) has been quoted to all suitors of the 29-year-old Senegal international, which has previously included Premier League side Sunderland and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.

Sow has scored 51 times in 102 Super Lig games since he joined from Lille in his native France in 2012, 14 goals being registered last term.
