  • Not concerned: Olaroiu.

Al Ahli’s squad players have to grasp the opportunity and put themselves into contention for continental glory with a committed display during tomorrow’s Arabian Gulf Cup clash against Al Wasl, according to boss Cosmin Olaroiu.

The Red Knights are without six UAE internationals for the clash at Rashid Stadium between the Group A pacesetters. The fixture is also sandwiched by the two-legged AFC Champions league final against Guangzhou Evergrande, with the Romanian’s side hoping to build on a goalless draw during November 21’s decider in China.

“We will try to fill the gaps of the players” Olaroiu said. “We have succeeded before with the other players and we hope they’ll do it again – it is a chance for them.”

Cheetahs striker Edgar Bruno expects those selected to “give their life” to triumph. He said: “I don’t think Al Ahli will take it easy against us, every player wants to play 100 per cent. Whomever will play, will give their life to win the game.”

One senior star who is still with Ahli is centre-back Salmeen Khamis, who remains outside Mahdi Ali’s Whites set-up despite his fine form. For Olaroiu, he saw this as a positive sign about the increased strength of UAE football.

He said: “In this moment, he is one of the best defenders in the Emirates. In my opinion, he should be with the national squad. But the best thing is now the UAE have started to get players not being picked for the national team who are good – this is a good thing.”
