  • Ousmane Dembele backs himself to develop into a great player.

Ousmane Dembele says he’s a “Ferrari under construction” after scoring his first goal for Barcelona.

The 20-year-old’s goal against Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday came after a difficult first season at the club, with a thigh injury on debut keeping him out of action for nearly four months after he joined as Barcelona’s most expensive signing, a record since broken by Philippe Coutinho.

But Dembele says he always had the backing of the club.

“The whole club supported me, the players were very cool with me,” Dembele told Onze Mondial.

‘The staff members too. They came to say to me: “Go quiet, you rest well, quiet”.

Now, the young attacker is looking to repay Barcelona’s faith in him by developing into one of the best players in the world.

“I hope to become a great player. Today, I consider myself a good player. I’m young, I still have a lot to learn. We will say that I am a Ferrari under construction.”

“They did not take me to replace Neymar. They did not tell me about him.

“They said to me “you come, you play and that’s it”. They already wanted to buy me for a long time even when Neymar was there. So no, no, it’s no pressure.

“Coutinho, they wanted to do it since this summer. They wanted to recruit us at the same time. So, no, no, no, I did not ask myself any questions. We are in Barcelona, competition is part of the game.”
