  • Relishing the chance: Luis Suarez

Ahead of this weekend’s El Clasico, Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has opened up on his experience of playing in the biggest match in Spanish football.

Newly-crowned league champions Barcelona welcome their fiercest rivals Real Madrid to the Nou Camp on Sunday night and although the title race is over, no love will be lost between the two sides.

Suarez has scored five El Clasico goals since moving from Liverpool in 2014 and he hopes to add to that tally.

Speaking to the official Barcelona website, he said: “Obviously, El Clasico are spectacular matches to play in. I have had the fortunes to watch a lot of them and to play in them and that is something incredible. It’s a great spectacle for the fans and people despite the fact that you’re nervous and anxious. The most important thing is to put on a good show for the fans because it’s a game that everyone watches around the world.

“It’s always special and it’s not just about the goals you scored, there are circumstances in the game that you make you think how great it is to play in El Clasico. The most important thing I remember of course is the first goal I scored in El Clasico which was in 2014-15, it also gave us the chance to take the title which was very emotional in my first season.

“They are unique moments and that’s what you live for as a footballer. Scoring a goal against the big rivals away from home is incredible and rounded a strong first-half of the season.”
