Barcelona are closing in on the signing of Sevilla centre-back Clement Lenglet after the club activated his €35m (£30.5m) release clause, according to Spanish radio station Cadena COPE (via SPORT).

Lenglet, who joined Sevilla from Nancy last January, has enjoyed an impressive season with Los Hispalenses, and his form hasn’t gone unnoticed with a host of clubs having been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, including Manchester United.

Amid interest, Sevilla offered Lenglet a contract extension in early May, but the centre-back is now expected to travel to the Camp Nou to formalise a deal with the league champions.

According to the report, the French youth international will sign a five-year deal with the Blaugrana, and the move is expected to be announced imminently.

The capture of Lenglet will be a relief to Ernesto Valverde and the Barca hierarchy, with Gerrard Pique the only centre-back guaranteed to be at the club for the start of next season.

Samuel Umtiti has been locked in contract talks with the club, although the French international has recently made clear his desire to remain in Catalonia, telling L’Equipe (via Marca): “What I wanted was the negotiation that I’ve already had with them and I’ve always been very clear about what I wanted.

“I have been clear that I want to renew with Barcelona and I want to be here next season. I’m at a club that has allowed me to fulfil my dream of playing for them and want to stay. I’m in charge of my future so for me to go, the club would have to kick me out.”

Barcelona are close to signing Antoine Griezmann, but Tottenham attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen has been identified as the Blaugrana’s ‘Plan B’ should they not get their man.

The 27-year-old Atletico Madrid and France forward has been a long-term target of Barca’s, and he has a release clause of around £88m in his current contract with Atleti.

10:05am – Real Madrid tried to sign Iniesta

Andres Iniesta has revealed Real Madrid tried to sign him earlier in his career.

The 34-year-old has just left the Camp Nou side after a scintillating 16-year career, which included nine La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and three Club World Cups.

But the Spain international could have left the Catalan giants for Los Blancos.

As reported in The Sun, Iniesta said: “There have been some moments when Madrid has felt around me, there have never been negotiations beyond the fact that I wanted to be there.

“But, since I stepped into La Masia, I was going to triumph at Barcelona.

“The beginning was not easy. But I always preferred to play ten minutes here than for another team.”

This fee is seen as ‘affordable’ for the La Liga champions according to Mundo Deportivo, quoted by the Daily Mail, although the Camp Nou club are keeping their eyes on other players should a deal for Griezmann fall through.

While Mundo are talking up Griezmann, scorer of 112 goals in 209 games for Atleti, before he even moves to Catalonia, other Barca-centric papers are still considering the club’s other options.

Sport claim that Barca are making other plans in case Griezmann backs out at the last moment, and have identified Eriksen as an alternative.

They say the Dane, who scored 14 goals and assisted a further 13 in 47 games for Spurs last season, is a ‘great alternative’ for if any deal for Griezmann falls through.

Eriksen has been crucial to Tottenham becoming established in the Premier League top four since he joined in 2013.

The playmaker has enjoyed a fantastic few years in north London under Mauricio Pochettino; his 2017/18 goal tally of 10 represented a career high in the Premier League.
