The international break is finally over and we can get back to what really matters – Fantasy Football!

Not all fantasy assets have returned unharmed though. The second highest point scoring defender, Seamus Coleman, suffered a horrific leg-break and has been ruled out for the foreseeable future.

In this column, we look at who could replace the Irishman in your Fantasy Premier League team and why Gylfi Sigurdsson should be hand the captain’s armband.

But first, here’s a look at the tactical geniuses who make up the top five in our fans league this week.

    WHO TO PICK AS CAPTAIN

Pedro [7.1m] was our captain pick in Gameweek 29 and unfortunately, the gamble on the Spaniard didn’t pay off.

The midfielder failed to contribute in a 2-1 away win for Chelsea at Stoke City.

This week, Gylfi Sigurdsson [7.8m] is the top candidate for the captaincy. Apart from the last Gameweek, the Icelandic international has provided returns in every one of his previous seven matches.

Swansea City heavily rely on the midfielder to create and score goals and they face Middlesbrough at home who are languishing at the bottom of the table having only recently sacking Aitor Karanka.

FIVE DEFENDERS TO REPLACE SEAMUS COLEMAN

We all know about the exploits of the likes of Gareth McAuley, Gary Cahill and Marcos Alonso.

But here are some defenders to consider who may not have taken centre stage yet.

ANTONIO VALENCIA – MANCHESTER UNITED [5.9m]

The Manchester United full-back is in demand at the moment and rightly so. He’s flown under the radar for a while but has risen to prominence in the last few rounds.

He’s delivered in seven of his last eight games, scoring 50 points with four clean sheets, three assists and one goal.

It also helps that United have not one but two double gameweeks to play before the end of the season and despite their Europa League commitments, the Ecuadorian appears to be a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s back-line.

    RYAN BERTRAND – SOUTHAMPTON [5.5m]

With four assists in his last six games, Ryan Bertrand is a full-back in form and the Saints have good fixtures over the next three weeks.

However, with star striker Manolo Gabbiadini out injured, his deliveries will have to find a new target man up top.

    MASON HOLGATE – EVERTON [4.0m]

England under-21 defender Mason Holgate is the man most likely to replace Coleman at right full-back.

With Ramiro Funes Mori also ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, skipper Phil Jagielka is set to play at centre back for the rest of the campaign – leaving the right-back berth just for 20-year-old Holgate.

However, you should consider both Blues defenders as options to replace the Irish captain.

Holgate will be given the license to push forward by Ronald Koeman, much in the same vein as Coleman, and is 0.6m cheaper than Jagielka as well.

Though, you can’t ignore the experienced defender’s threat from set-pieces, or you know, the possibility of him scoring a last-gasp screamer in a Merseyside derby (AGAIN).

CHRISTIAN FUCHS – LEICESTER CITY [5.2m]

Leicester City are enjoying a resurgence since Claudio Ranieri’s dismissal and all of a sudden, their players are FPL hot property again.

Despite still struggling to keep a clean sheet, Christian Fuchs is bombing down the left side again and has scored 15 points in the last three rounds with an assist and a goal.

    BEN DAVIES – TOTTENHAM [4.8m]

With Danny Rose injured, Ben Davies has slotted in at left-back for Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive Spurs side. With a healthy run of fixtures ahead, you can expect the Welshman to earn a few clean sheets.

He’s also proved to be just as good as Rose or Kyle Walker on the opposite flank. In fact, he’s even bettered the English right-back’s threat going forward, creating more chances over the last six gameweeks.
