  • In recent days, a move to Manchester United from Real Madrid for Alvaro Morata has appeared imminent.

The 24-year-old is expected to be reunited with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, the man who handed him his debut.

Here, we look at five lesser known facts about the Spanish striker.

    PUBLIC PROPOSAL

Who doesn’t love a dramatic marriage proposal? Morata took his girlfriend, Alice Campello, to a magic show back in December last year and then surprised her by getting up on stage and proposing.

The magician, Antonio Diaz, was in on the act as he invited the couple up to participate in his next trick. He had Alice face away from Morata and then turn around to see the Spaniard, ring in hand, down on one knee.

    RECORD TRANSFER FEE

The transfer fee being mooted for Morata would shatter the previous record for a Spanish player.

Chelsea infamously paid £50 million for Fernando Torres, which is currently the record. Morata is expected to cost at least £60 million.

    STUNNING MINUTES-TO-GOAL RATIO

Morata scored 15 goals in La Liga last season despite having to play second fiddle to Karim Benzema. The Spaniard scores a goal every 89 minutes, a minutes-to-goal ratio better than anyone else in the Madrid team, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

He scored at a quicker rate than Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann, and top Spanish scorer Iago Aspas. In fact, only Lionel Messi had a better minutes-to-goal ratio last season.

    CAPABLE OF GOALS…AND GOAL DROUGHTS

Morata may be a prolific scorer now, but during his spell away from Madrid at Juventus, he had a goal drought that lasted over 100 days.

A stretch that began in October 2015 ended only in January 2016 with a brace against Inter Milan. In an interview earlier this year, Morata cited his uncertain future as the reason why his head wasn’t in the right place at the time.

After a good first season in Turin, Madrid showed an interest to buy him back. Juventus therefore limited his appearances, partly to dissuade Madrid and partly to prepare themselves for life without him.

    ATLETI AGENT

Morata is represented by former Atletico Madrid player Juanma Lopez. The former Spanish international graduated from the club’s youth academy and spent his entire senior career, spanning over a decade, at the Vincente Calderon.

The defender also turned out for the Spanish national team 11 times. Lopez had an aggressive approach and was no stranger to suspensions.

    REUNITED WITH POGBA

Oddly, the fact that Morata was teammates with Paul Pogba at Juventus has gone under the radar during discussion about this proposed transfer.

During the 2015-16 season, both Pogba and Morata grew into being two of the Italian side’s most important players

The duo both left Juventus to return to their old clubs last summer, and they’re now set to be reunited at Manchester United.
