  • Romelu Lukaku.

Michael Carrick praised new Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku who joined the club from Everton on Monday.

The 24-year-old penned a five-year deal at Old Trafford for £75 million and will be a devastating force in Jose Mourinho’s attack this season.

Midfielder Carrick believes the Belgian international will be a key man for Red Devils.

“You don’t want to look to put everything on his shoulders, but that is why he has been brought here – to help at that end of the pitch, to score and create goals,” Carrick told MUTV.

“Of course, he is going to be the [main] one we look to for scoring goals and I am sure he will.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the Red Devils inspirational leader in attack last season, but Carrick thinks the club have acquired another marquee signing with a significant role to play.

“Listen, you have seen what he can bring to us. He is a big guy, he has got a big presence and he scores goals.

“That is what we are going to need from him, that is what he is going to bring and I am sure he will have a great time here,” he added.

With goal returns of 20, 25 and 26 over the past three seasons, Mourinho will have the scoring qualities of a player like Lukaku as United cope with the dual demands of the Premier League and Champions League football next season.
