Michael Carrick praised new Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku who joined the club from Everton on Monday.

The 24-year-old penned a five-year deal at Old Trafford for £75 million and will be a devastating force in Jose Mourinho’s attack this season.

Midfielder Carrick believes the Belgian international will be a key man for Red Devils.

“You don’t want to look to put everything on his shoulders, but that is why he has been brought here – to help at that end of the pitch, to score and create goals,” Carrick told MUTV.

“Of course, he is going to be the [main] one we look to for scoring goals and I am sure he will.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the Red Devils inspirational leader in attack last season, but Carrick thinks the club have acquired another marquee signing with a significant role to play.

“Listen, you have seen what he can bring to us. He is a big guy, he has got a big presence and he scores goals.

“That is what we are going to need from him, that is what he is going to bring and I am sure he will have a great time here,” he added.

With goal returns of 20, 25 and 26 over the past three seasons, Mourinho will have the scoring qualities of a player like Lukaku as United cope with the dual demands of the Premier League and Champions League football next season.

Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has pledged to give Steven Gerrard all the support he needs as the former captain prepares for his first full season as coach.

Gerrard has taken over the club’s under-18s team, having closely associated himself with that group during his initial roving role when he started at the club’s academy in February.

He will oversee them in their first pre-season friendly against Burton Albion behind closed doors at St George’s Park and Klopp is keen to give the former midfielder all the help he requires to develop the club’s next generation of players.

“I can imagine how excited he is,” Klopp told liverpoolfc.com. “It’s a wonderful job to work with these skilled boys and to do the things you think are right for them, bring in new experience and learn a lot of things at the same time.

“It will be a fantastic time for him. Of course we’ll have a close relationship with him and the U23s, we always had it.

“It’s very important for us because that’s our next generation and we want to help them as much as we can. Of course we’ll be in close contact.”

First-teamers Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho both returned to training at the club’s Melwood complex on Tuesday after an extended summer break following international commitments.

They are a week behind most of their team-mates which makes it unlikely they will feature in the friendlies against Tranmere on Wednesday or Wigan on Friday.

Lukaku trains with his new Manchester United teammates for the first time

Sport360 staff 10/07/2017

Romelu Lukaku has hit the ground running at Manchester United, training with his new team-mates in Los Angeles within an hour of completing his big-money from Everton.

A return to former club Chelsea had looked likely for much of the summer, only for United to swoop in and gazump the Premier League champions.

Lukaku has arrived in a deal worth £75million plus add-ons, penning a five-year deal at Old Trafford with the option of a sixth.

"I would like to start by thanking Everton and the fans for the last four wonderful seasons, I have made some special friends and we have shared some amazing moments," said the striker, who has chosen the number nine worn by Zlatan Ibrahimovic last term. "However, when Manchester United and Jose Mourinho come knocking at the door it is an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I could not turn down. "You could see the fight, determination and the spirit in this team during the Europa League final and I want to become a part of that. "I cannot wait to run out at Old Trafford in front of 75,000 fans but before that pre-season is where the hard work starts and I am looking forward to that first training session." That first session came within an hour of official confirmation of the deal, having been on holiday in Los Angeles with United midfielder Paul Pogba. Lukaku stayed with the team at their Beverly Hills hotel on Sunday and arrived with his new team-mates at UCLA the following morning, signing autographs and posing for photos for supporters. The striker was made to sweat alongside as United's pre-season tour got under way, with the first of a double session on Monday taking place at Drake Stadium in temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius.
