Joe Hart's highs and lows at Manchester City as England goalkeeper completes loan move to West Ham

  • England goalkeeper Joe Hart has left Manchester City on loan for the second successive season. The 30-year-old has joined West Ham after spending the last campaign at Serie A club Torino.

    Here, are some of the highs and lows of Hart’s City career.

    HIGH – Joins from Shrewsbury in May 2006 for a reported initial £600,000 possibly rising to £1.5million, although then City chairman John Wardle claimed in 2012 that the transfer fee was actually £100,000.

    HIGH – Makes his City debut at home to Sheffield United in the Premier League in October 2006, keeping a clean sheet in the goalless draw.

    LOW – Behind Andreas Isaksson and Nicky Weaver at City, Hart completes the 2006-07 season with loan spells at Tranmere and Blackpool.

    HIGH – City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson names Hart as his first-choice keeper at the start of the 2007-08 season ahead of Sweden stopper Isaksson. Wins his first five games.

    LOW – The winning run comes to a crashing end as Hart is beaten six times in a 6-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea.

    HIGH – After winning his first England cap in June 2008 and with Isaksson moving to PSV Eindhoven, Hart is handed the City number one jersey for the 2008-09 season.

    HIGH – Hart’s status as City’s top goalkeeper is rewarded with a new five-year contract in October 2008.

    LOW – Loses first-team place to Shay Given after City manager Mark Hughes signs the Republic of Ireland international from Newcastle in January 2009.

    LOW – Goes out on loan to Premier League new boys Birmingham for the 2009-10 season having played no games for City following Given’s arrival.

    HIGH – Having been named in the PFA Team of the Year for his performances at Birmingham, Hart is chosen by City boss Roberto Mancini to start the 2010-11 season ahead of Given.

    HIGH – Plays key role as City qualify for the Champions League for the first time. Claims Premier League’s Golden Gloves record with 18 clean sheets and sets new club best of 29 in all competitions.

    HIGH – Helps City claim first major honour for 35 years with a 1-0 FA Cup final victory over Stoke in May 2011.

    HIGH – Signs another five-year contract to keep him at City until 2016.

    HIGH – Wins the Golden Glove award for the second year running as City take the 2011-12 Premier League title by beating QPR 3-2 through Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp finish.

    LOW – City lose out to neighbours Manchester United in 2012-13 title race, and there is no FA Cup consolation as Ben Watson’s 90th-minute header beats him at Wembley.

    LOW – Loses first-team spot to Costel Pantilimon after mistake allows Fernando Torres to grab last-minute winner for title rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

    HIGH – Regains place after missing nearly two months of Premier League action, and remains first choice as City win the title for the second time in three seasons in 2013-14.

    LOW – Stays on bench as Pantilimon plays in 3-1 Capital One Cup final victory over Sunderland in March 2014.

    HIGH – Signs another five-year contract on improved terms to keep him at City until 2019.

    HIGH – Saves Lionel Messi penalty in a Champions League round of 16 tie against Barcelona. The Argentina superstar describes Hart as a “phenomenon” after he produced a record-breaking 10 saves during the Nou Camp return.

    HIGH – Wins the Premier League Golden Glove award for the fourth time at the end of the 2014-15 season.

    LOW – Watches from bench again as understudy Willy Caballero is the hero of Capital One Cup final penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool in February 2016.

    HIGH – Saves Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty in City’s Champions League quarter-final against Paris St Germain. City win 3-2 on aggregate, but bow out to eventual winners Real Madrid at the semi-final stage.

    LOW – Dropped by new City boss Pep Guardiola for the first match of the 2016-17 Premier League season, with the Spaniard quickly moving to sign Claudio Bravo. Joins Serie A club Torino on a season-long loan when it becomes clear he will not be playing under the Spaniard.

    LOW – City spend £35million on Benfica’s Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson in the summer of 2017 – and Hart admits City do not need him after his time at Torino comes to an end.
