Last week saw plenty of wildcards played, 275,254 in total.

However, they didn’t go exactly to plan as Liverpool were beaten 5-0 at Manchester City, causing plenty of investment in the Reds to backfire.

In fact, 72% of Fantasy Premier League managers who used their wildcards did worse than they did in the previous Gameweek, averaging 38 points, while the overall average for Gameweek Four was 44.

Here are a few pointers to guide you ahead of Gameweek Five.

    CAPTAIN – HARRY KANE | TOTTENHAM | 12.4M

Harry Kane is rid of the August curse for at least another 12 months it seems. The striker has bagged braces in three of his last four outings with England, Tottenham in the league and again in the Champions League since the start of September.

He’s showing no signs of slowing down either. With Swansea to face at home, he’s an obvious candidate for the armband. The Swans have conceded the most shots in the league so far and Kane has had more shots than any other player, so it’s a simple equation.

There remains a concern over Tottenham’s domestic form at Wembley but after dispatching Borussia Dortmund so emphatically at the venue in midweek, they should go into this one with a spring in their steps.

    ALTERNATIVE

Liverpool face Burnley at Anfield on Saturday and will want to put that defeat to City behind them. Mohamed Salah (9m) and ROBERTO FIRMINO (8.5m) are both good options, and scored in midweek, but the Brazilian edges it because of his tendency to rack up bonus points.

Despite missing a penalty against Sevilla in the Champions League, the fact that he’s taking them is an advantage in itself. Sadio Mane’s (9.5m) suspension and Philippe Coutinho’s (8.8m) lack of match fitness means the onus will fall on Firmino and Salah to deliver.

    BOLD CHOICE

ALVARO MORATA (10.2m) is the highest scoring forward in the game so far with 30 points, so it’s a bit odd that he’s mentioned in this segment. For one reason or another, he simply isn’t fancied over the likes of Romelu Lukaku (11.7m), Harry Kane (12.4m) or Firmino.

Furthermore, Chelsea host Arsenal on Sunday, a fixture with a Fixture Difficulty Rating of four in FPL. However, we know that the Gunners have lost their last five games at the Bridge, conceding 15 and scoring just two.

    TWO INS

    BEN DAVIES | TOTTENHAM | 5.7M

Who would have thought that at this stage of the season, Ben Davies would be the highest scoring player in FPL? With 32 points so far, the Welshman has been a hit this season. Danny Rose who?

If you don’t have him in your side already, it’s not too late. Spurs have a great run of fixtures over the next four weeks. He’s well ahead of even Marcos Alonso (7.1m) in terms of his creativity index amongst defenders, registering 188.4 compared to the Chelsea man’s 102.2.

He also leads the way with Bonus Points System with 124, more than any other player.

    JAMIE VARDY | LEICESTER CITY | 8.5M

He’s flown under the radar a bit but Jamie Vardy has quietly chipped away at 24 points so far this season, just one behind the hugely popular Romelu Lukaku.

At just 8.5m as well, he’s a whole 3.2m cheaper than the Belgian and 3.9m cheaper than Kane. If you can’t have both Kane and Lukaku, one of them alongside Firmino (8.5m) and Vardy looks like a very appealing frontline, especially with the favourable fixtures headed Leicester’s way, starting with Huddersfield away on Saturday.

    TWO OUTS

    PAUL POGBA | MANCHESTER UNITED | 8.2M

With Paul Pogba facing six weeks out after picking up a hamstring injury in midweek, there’s really no point holding on to him for now. That money should be reinvested in your squad with Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.4m) the obvious replacement. David Silva (8.2m) is also worth considering for 0.2m cheaper.

    SADIO MANE | LIVERPOOL | 9.5M

His straight red against Manchester City last week means Sadio Mane is suspended for the next three fixtures in the league and is the other rather obvious pick to go out this week.

The good news is, there are plenty of options at that price. Kevin De Bruyne (9.9m) has found a bit of form again while Tottenham duo Christian Eriksen (9.7m) and Dele Alli (9.5m) are more than worthy replacements.
