  • On fire: Aguero.

It was the Sergio Aguero show as the Argentine bagged a hat-trick to take Manchester City to the top of the Premier League after a 6-0 rout of Watford at Vicarage Road.

Aguero also provided an assist for Gabriel Jesus.

Kevin De Bruyne played the role of provider twice himself as Nicolas Otamendi’s header and Raheem Sterling’s penalty saw City fire a warning to the rest of the league.

Here’s what we learned from the encounter.

DE BRUYNE AND SILVA COMBO GROWING IN INFLUENCE

David Silva has started this season in fine form and while that was pleasing for City, it initially meant that Kevin De Bruyne seemed to take a backseat.

The Belgian has been one of their key players since his arrival in 2015 but with Pep Guardiola opting for two strikers upfront more often than not this season and Silva playing out of his skin, De Bruyne was initially confined to a more withdrawn role.

In the last few outings though, the 26-year-old has begun to play in tandem with the Spaniard a lot more and the duo wreaked havoc again at Watford.

    AGUERO PROVING VALUE TO CITY

A hat-trick and an assist, not too shabby for a day’s work. Aguero is renowned for absolutely demolishing Premier League defences on his day but last season was a relatively quiet one by his standards as he struggled to establish himself under Guardiola.

The summer saw him linked to a move away from the club as well but the former Barcelona manager insisted that the Argentine was in his plans for this season.

Aguero repaid his manager’s faith in him and then some at Vicarage Road, terrorising Watford’s defence, leaving them paralysed with fear. For those who wrote him off last season, this was an emphatic reminder of his devastating ability in front of goal. At only 29, this performance sent a message to all the critics – there’s plenty yet to come from Sergio Aguero.

    REALITY CHECK FOR WATFORD

Watford had enjoyed a decent start to the season and found themselves in a Champions League spot ahead of this fixture. Promising manager Marco Silva brought a bit of guile to the side and they enjoyed some decent results including a 3-3 draw against Liverpool and 2-0 wins away to Bournemouth and Southampton.

However, this was a stunning defeat in which they absolutely capitulated in the face of City’s relentless attack spearheaded by an irresistible Aguero.

The Hornets will now have to reassess their strategy against the bigger teams as they’ve now conceded nine goals in two games against top four opposition this season. Silva has some work to do with his squad. As good as City were on the day, the defending was abysmal, it must be said.
