  • Manchester United welcomed Wayne Rooney back to Old Trafford, then showed him what he’s missing out on this season.

After Antonio Valencia opened the scoring with a stunning strike, Everton held on and gave United a few scares in a search for an equaliser, but once the second goal came in the 83rd minute the floodgates opened.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku, and Anthony Martial all got on the scoresheet as United romped to a 4-0 win.

The scoreline perhaps flattered the hosts but this was yet another controlled performance with a late flourish, which has become the United trademark this season.

    MANCHESTER UNITED

DAVID DE GEA: Not tested to a great extent but dealt well with a Rooney and Ramirez pile-driver. 6

ASHLEY YOUNG: Provided good attacking support on the right but was worked hard defensively by Martina. 6

PHIL JONES: Worked well in partnership with Bailly and limited Everton’s attack. 6

ERIC BAILLY: Had some good duels with Rooney and, overall, shaded that particular battle. 6

ANTONIO VALENCIA: Lit up Old Trafford with a stunning half-volley after just four minutes and did a sound job thereafter. 7

NEMANJA MATIC: Found Valencia for the early goal with a well-weighted pass and gave United a lot of control in midfield. 7

MAROUANE FELLAINI: Provided his usual nuisance value in the box for United but otherwise quiet. 6

MARCUS RASHFORD: Struggled to make an impact in the game and was taken off just after the hour. 4

HENRIKH MKHITARYAN: Made some promising runs and, after meeting some frustration, eventually broke through to settle the game with United’s second goal. 7

JUAN MATA: Got into some good positions, constantly looked to create and was unlucky with a free-kick which hit the post. 7

ROMELU LUKAKU: Spurned a gilt-edged chance in the first half but came to life in the latter stages, setting up a goal for Mkhitaryan and grabbing one himself. 7

    Substitutes

JESSE LINGARD (for Rashford, 61): Provided more spark than the man he replaced but was unable to hit the target with a couple of opportunities. 6

ANDER HERRERA (for Mata, 77): Helped give United the extra energy that brought them three late goals. 6

ANTHONY MARTIAL (for Mkhitaryan, 88): Got on the scoresheet after United won a late penalty. 6

    EVERTON

JORDAN PICKFORD: Looked alert and and did not deserve to concede four times. 6

CUCO MARTINA: Made some good runs on the right and was able to find his targets with some incisive passes. 7

MICHAEL KEANE: Made some strong defensive contributions but was almost made to pay for one sloppy pass. 6

ASHLEY WILLIAMS: A commanding performance, winning plenty of headers and tackles, was marred by the late error which led to United’s killer second goal. 6

PHIL JAGIELKA: Also looked sold alongside Keane and Williams, particularly when dealing with crosses. 7

LEIGHTON BAINES: Everton were unable to make the most of the width he offered on the left. 6

MORGAN SCHNEIDERLIN: Became a more forceful presence in the second half. 6

IDRISSA GANA GUEYE: An efficient performance without standing out. 6

TOM DAVIES: Showed plenty of commitment, especially in terms of winning back possession, but passing let him down. 6

GYLFI SIGURDSSON: Unable to influence the game as United strangled a lot of Everton’s attacks. 5

WAYNE ROONEY: Provided a threat and worked hard but did not get the luck his effort warranted. 7

    Substitutes

SANDRO RAMIREZ (for Davies, 66): Unable to provide any late spark, although he did extend De Gea late on. 6

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN (for Gueye, 76): Could only watch as Everton capitulated in the latter stages. 5

KEVIN MIRALLAS (for Rooney, 82): Had little influence as United ran riot in the closing minutes. 5
