  • Jesse Lingard scored the winner as Manchester United rallied from a goal down to defeat defending champions Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.

Willian fired Chelsea ahead on 32 minutes but Romelu Lukaku replied before half-time against his former club, with Lingard heading home a cross 15 minutes from time to complete the turnaround.

Here, we analyse Morata’s performance for Antonio Conte’s side.

    30 SECOND REPORT

Hate him or love him but Diego Costa was ten times the player Morata is at Chelsea. Since signing from Real Madrid during the summer, the Spaniard has been slowly drifting away from his best form as the season has progressed – and now finds himself heading into the business end of the campaign lacking confidence and class. Somehow stayed on the field for the full 90 minutes – with sub Giroud doing more in the final 12 than he offered in the entire match

    GOT RIGHT

There was little to impress about Morata’s performance against Manchester United, with the only positive coming in the form of the Spaniard completing his first full 90 minutes since returning from his back injury. Antonio Conte will be hoping his number nine can now discover his early-season form as quickly as possible

    GOT WRONG

Needs to man up – There’s no doubt that the Spaniard is a class act, but if he wants to elevate himself to the next level, he needs to stay on his feet and start winning his own ball, instead of being bullied by the opposition.

Hold up play – Still ineffective at holding possession and bringing other players into the game. With Hazard and Willian in constant support, this should be a significant way to get more pace and talent on the ball – but the Spaniard failed to provide and was dispossessed five times.

    KEY MOMENTS

5 mins (CROSSBAR) – Marcos Alonso’s volley finds Morata but his side-footed volley crashes off the woodwork. What a goal it would have been!

49th min (CHANCE) – Willian does well to win the ball and fend off a number of players before feeding Morata, who sees his shot blocked as he attempts to cut inside.

    VERDICT – 6/10

He didn’t have enough of an influence on the game for large periods but didn’t disappoint when he was in threatening areas. If he converted that early goal it could have had a completely different reflection on the contest. The Spaniard has to work to do on his hold-up play and how to bring on-rushing runners into the game but he’s making progress under a new system under Conte.
