  • Vieira was captain during Wenger's most successful period at Arsenal.

Patrick Vieira says he is “flattered” by speculation linking him to taking over as manager of former club Arsenal but insists he is happy in New York.

Vieira, who is currently the head coach of New York City FC, told New York radio station WNYE: “I am always flattered to hear my name linked with different football clubs. That is good for your ego.

“But at the same time, I am happy here.”

Vieira arrived at Arsenal the same year Arsene Wenger did, in 1996, and went on to win three Premier League titles and three FA Cup trophies under his fellow Frenchman’s tutelage.

The title at the end of Arsenal’s 2003/04 ‘Invincibles’ season, when they went the entire league campaign unbeaten, was the pinnacle of the duo’s achievements.

“I spent nine years at Arsenal which makes the club really special for me,” Vieira said, before adding, “but that is not enough to coach the team.”

“We will see what will happen in the next couple of years.”
