  • After the drama and entertainment from the Champions League and Europa League in midweek, the Premier League returned with some eagerly anticipated match-ups in game week six.

Liverpool continued their 100-per-cent winning start to the campaign and are now the only side in the top flight to have won all their games after undefeated Chelsea were held to a draw by West Ham.

Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal all won, while Manchester United escaped with a point against the very dangerous Wolves at Old Trafford.

Struggling Burnley picked up their first victory of the season against Bournemouth and Leicester showed determination to overcome a rigid Huddersfield.

Both matchdays were filled with excitement and memorable moments, but who stood out and who crumbled under the pressure? Here are our winners and losers from week six.

    WINNERS:

    Riyad Mahrez – Manchester City

The Algerian must have been frustrated to see his name listed on the City bench prior to the visit to Cardiff, but he ended the afternoon gleaming as he managed to score a late brace to hand his side a convincing 5-0 win.

Mahrez has struggled to find his best form since moving to Etihad Stadium in the summer, but he got his first goals for the club to boost his confidence. His first was a simple tap in, while the second was a trademark Mahrez goal – whipping the ball into the far corner with his left foot.

Mahrez is settling in at City and that is not good news for the rest of the league.

    James Maddison – Leicester City

The attacking midfielder ran the show against Huddersfield at King Power Stadium. The Englishman curled in a delightful free-kick to help the Foxes to a 3-1 win.

There are calls for Maddison to be selected in next month’s senior England squad and his performance this weekend is sure to catch the eye of boss Gareth Southgate.

With brilliant dribbling, good work rate and an eye for goal, Maddison is the complete package.

    Petr Cech – Arsenal

With summer signing Bernd Leno breathing down his neck, Cech produced his best performance of the season to preserve a clean sheet as the Gunners beat Everton 2-0.

The veteran goalkeeper made a string of fine saves to deny the Toffees and if it wasn’t for him, the score line would have been very different.

Cech has been given the nod over Leno by Unai Emery so far this season in the league and with a performance like that, you can’t argue with the decision.

    LOSERS:

    Mamadou Sakho – Crystal Palace

Sakho had a very good game defensively in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle, but cost his side two points right at the end with a shocking effort on goal.

The Frenchman has taken an early lead for the ‘miss of the season’ accolade as he headed wide from inside the six-yard box with the entire goal gaping.

It was harder to miss than to score and Sakho must still be wondering how he managed to miss the target.

    Wesley Hoedt – Southampton

The Southampton defender will want to erase this match from his memory as soon as he can as he endured a nightmare afternoon at Anfield.

Hoedt was in the wrong place at the wrong time as a driven ball into the box cannoned off him and into his own goal to hand Liverpool the lead and it went downhill for the Saints from there.

The centre-back was run ragged by Liverpool’s free-flowing movement.

    Bournemouth

The Cherries have made a very promising start to the league season, but fell to a 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor.

Eddie Howe’s men simply could not force the ball into the net, with a combination of resurgent goalkeeper Joe Hart and luck saving the Clarets.

Bournemouth were not at their best defensively and were split open multiple times by a clinical Burnley attack. Uncharacteristic from the Cherries, who will be desperate to bounce back next week.
