  • It was a tense affair in Paris.

Following the Republic of Ireland’s opening draw with Sweden in Paris, the key figures on show have been having their say on the evening’s action.

Sport360 rounds-up the best of the post-match quotes from the French capital.

Wes Hoolahan, Republic of Ireland goalscorer:

“Getting a goal for Ireland in the Euros is a great achievement.

“It’s great work from Seamus (Coleman) and it’s just come to me and I’ve caught it on the half-volley and was delighted to see it go in the back of the net.

“Fair play to the boys they were magnificent and unlucky not to get three points, but we’ll take the point.

“We started well and created a lot of chances. First half we were excellent, start of the second half we were excellent as well, but unfortunately in the last 20 minutes we probably let it get away from us. But the boys should be proud of themselves.

“My calf was playing up a little bit but I should be fine. It was end-to-end stuff and I’m sure it was a great game to watch.”

Martin O’Neill, Republic of Ireland manager:

“I thought they were magnificent in the game with some really great football.

“We should have been at least in front by half-time. We were very, very dominant, we played great and then we got in front just after half-time.

“Naturally there is going to be a spell in the game where Sweden come into it, and they scored a goal at a time when we were still pretty strong.

“Of course the goal deflates you and there is disappointment in the dressing room, but I don’t think the players should be downhearted with their performance.

“I think they should be absolutely thrilled with the way we played.

“The way it happened of course, that’s the disappointment. We should be speaking to you here with three points instead of one.”

    Erik Hamren, Sweden coach:

“Even though we managed to come back and equalise, I am disappointed. We will need to play at 300 percent to get through.

“In the first 15 minutes Ireland were superior. Physically and in the air they are very strong.

“Going forward, our attack did not function in the first half.

“We performed better in the second half because they sat back. We also combined a bit more, notably on the left with (Martin) Olsson.

“It is positive that we did not lose but we didn’t play at our best. There is no problem with our attitude though. Sometimes it’s difficult to click right away.

“I thought nevertheless that Ibra played an important role in the goal we scored. But they defended very well against him.”
