  • Pep Guardiola claimed his first trophy in English football as Manchester City powered to a 3-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final.

Sergio Aguero set the Premier League leaders on the way to victory with the opening goal before second-half strikes from the outstanding Vincent Kompany and David Silva finished off the Gunners at Wembley.

It was an emphatic response from City after their bid for a quadruple came to an end with a shock defeat to League One Wigan on Monday.

Here, we analyse goalscorer Aguero’s performance for the winners.

    BASIC STATS

    Goals -1

    Shots – 4

    Shots on target -1

    Dribbles – 3

    Passes – 12

    Pass Accuracy – 75%

    30 SECOND REPORT

The Argentine was superb once again, scoring his 30th goal of the campaign for a fourth season in the Sky Blue jersey. But apart from his strike, Aguero always looked willing to take on possession and bring teammates into the game. The 29-year-old was consistent throughout the match, continuing to run at the Arsenal defence in search of another goal late in the contest. Class is permanent.

    GOT RIGHT

Finishing – Usually Aguero’s strong point, and he showed no signs of nervousness when clipping the ball over David Ospina for the opening goal after 18 minutes.

Impact – City did not need their talisman to lead the line throughout with Leroy Sane and Kevin de Bruyne in such scintillating form. The City attackers shared the workload, but Aguero was the influential figure.

    GOT WRONG

Faded as the game progressed – Although he wasn’t provided with a consistent service of ball, the Argentine failed to stay in the game for parts of the second half as David Silva and Vincent Kompany completed the scoring.

Not as busy in attack – Unlike Gabriel Jesus who always goes searching for possession, Aguero gives the impression of looking busy but doesn’t show a hunger to win his own ball.

    KEY MOMENTS

18th minute (GOAL) – Claudio Bravo’s goal kick sails over the top of the Arsenal defence and Aguero nudges Shkodran Mustafi before running on to chip the ball over a stranded David Ospina.

39th minute (CHANCE) – City come bounding forward again and Aguero takes possession but his effort stays out before Kevin de Bruyne’s crashes the ball into the side netting.

    VERDICT – 8/10

Continues to be a menacing presence for Guardiola’s side, and panics the opposition defence into collapse every time he breaks through on goal. If City are to go on and win the treble this season, then the elusive Argentine will be central to their trophy ambitions. Steps up to the mantle every time and fails to disappoint.
