  • Impressive cast: Iker Casillas and James Rodriguez.

Iker Casillas claims the current Real Madrid crop is possibly the best team he has played for throughout his whole 15-year career at the Bernabeu.

The Madrid goalkeeper was left relatively inactive as his team romped to their 11th consecutive victory on Saturday, thrashing outclassed Granada 4-0 to leapfrog Barcelona at the top of the La Liga standings.

Los Blancos have scored 46 goals during their recent run of success, which has included handsome victories over Barca and Liverpool, and their defensive efforts have also greatly improved with Casillas conceding just one goal – Neymar’s fourth-minute strike in last weekend’s Clasico – in his last five games.

With Cristiano Ronaldo in record-breaking goalscoring form and summer signings James Rodriguez – who scored a stunning volley against Granada – and Toni Kroos settling quickly at their new club, Madrid are certainly looking like a formidable outfit this season.

Unsurprisingly, the magnificent run of form has left their experienced club captain full of confidence for the season ahead: “This current side has started to grow after winning two titles last season and we want to continue like this,” Casillas mused.

The 33-year-old has spent 15 years in the first team with the Bernabeu club, winning three Champions League titles and five La Liga crowns whilst playing alongside legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham, Luis Figo, Raul and Roberto Carlos.

Yet even in that heady company, the custodian believes they would all struggle to match the excellence of Carlo Ancelotti’s reigning European champions.

“This could be the best Real Madrid team I have played in,” he added. “The results are already there and let’s hope this side can go down in history. We have all the right ingredients.”

Madrid are back in action tomorrow night, when victory over Liverpool at the Bernabeu could see them clinch top spot in their Champions League group.

Meanwhile, Gareth Bale returned to training yesterday having missed Los Blancos’ last five games with a buttock injury with the club confirming that the Welshman completed “demanding circuits of dribbling, passing and shooting.”
