  • Middlesbrough's English striker Patrick Bamford (2nd R) celebrates after he scores the opening goal of the FA Cup.

Premier League title challengers Chelsea and Manchester City both crashed out of the FA Cup after being sensationally beaten by lower-league opponents in the fourth round on Saturday.

Patrick Bamford and Kike were Middlesbrough's goal-scoring heroes as they knocked Manchester City out of the FA Cup with a stunning 2-0 win at the Premier League champions' Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat will inevitably raise questions about City's decision to spend the week at a warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi and, more importantly, the fact that Manuel Pellegrini's side only returned to England late on Friday.

Middlesbrough broke the deadlock after 52 minutes with a goal that owed everything to City's growing nerves in defence as Fernando under-hit a back pass towards Willy Caballero, in for the rested Joe Hart, and the goalkeeper immediately came under pressure from Albert Adomah.

Caballero's unconvincing clearance ricocheted against the Middlesbrough man and the ball rolled towards the goal-line where Fernando, in an attempt to clear, succeeded only in striking the ball against Bamford and into his own net.

A weakened Chelsea team threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 at home to third-tier Bradford City in one of the biggest upsets in the competition's recent history.

League One City brilliantly responded from two goals down after 38 minutes to dump the Barclays Premier League leaders out of the FA Cup.

Chelsea reject Filipe Morais levelled the fourth-round tie with 15 minutes remaining and Jon Stead, the scorer of City's first, teed up Andy Halliday for the winner eight minutes from time.

Liverpool avoided the fate that befell Chelsea and City, but they were taken to a replay by Championship club Bolton following a 0-0 draw at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who rested captain Steven Gerrard, saw his side dominate, but they could not find a way past Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson (R) vies with Bolton Wanderers' striker Conor Wilkinson (L) during the FA Cup fourth round football match.

Elsewhere, Leicester staged a dramatic late fightback to knock Tottenham out of the competition as Jeffrey Schlupp's last-gasp goal sealed a 2-1 fourth round win.

With Southampton beaten 3-2 by Crystal Palace, it means that none of the Premier League's top three teams will feature in Monday's fifth-round draw, blowing the competition wide open.

Victor Anichebe scored both goals as West Bromwich Albion won 2-1 at Birmingham City, while Sunderland drew 0-0 at home to Fulham.
