  • Memphis Depay (c) has drawn comparisons with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Leroy Fer says fearless Memphis Depay will relish the challenge of trying to become the new Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United.

Much is expected of Depay at Old Trafford next season following his £25 million (Dh144m) move from PSV Eindhoven.

But QPR midfielder Fer reckons his 21-year-old compatriot will light up the Premier League in the same way as Ronaldo did during his six years at United.

And Fer said: “He’s very talented, he’s strong, he’s quick, he’s got skills and he can score goals. He’s a massive player and he’s going to be big in Manchester.

“Of course he has to adapt to this league and Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs, but I don’t think it’s going to be hard for him because he’s a strong player, a very confident player.

“He won’t be scared and that’s what I like about him, he isn’t scared.

“He will enjoy this [comparison]. He’s not as tall as Ronaldo, but he’s still strong, and he’s got the same ability, scoring goals and quick. It was no surprise what he did at the World Cup.

“He came on as a sub against Australia and got us the winner – that’s a guy who was 20 years old then and it didn’t show because he came in and started to play like that, so good.

“Ronaldo is a bigger player than him right now because of what he’s done, but Memphis is only 21 and if he can be as good as Ronaldo was at Manchester United he is going to be a big player. I think he can be.”

United boss Louis van Gaal is well aware of Depay’s quality after coaching him for Holland, and sanctioned the transfer before the summer amid interest from PSG and Liverpool.

And Fer believes working under Van Gaal will help Depay improve further.

“I have known him two or three years now with the national team and he asked me about the Premier League, what is it like?” he added.

“I told him it’s a hard league, but for him, with his ability and skills, I think he can play a massive part for Manchester United.

“Playing with stars like Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria will be great for him and will make him better for sure. He knows Van Gaal too and he will make him better.”
