The 38-year-old has emerged as Newcastle’s No 1 candidate for the hotseat on Tyneside with John Carver’s role unlikely to be extended into next season.
According to several British reports, Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley will meet with Vieira this week in the hope of securing an appointment by Friday.
Vieira, who is due to complete his UEFA Pro License course next month, is a free agent as he is at the end of his contract as City’s Under-21 coach and the club are yet to offer him a new deal.
However, the ex-France midfielder remains highly-regarded at the Etihad with a view to one day potentially becoming first-team boss.
