  • The best in the business: Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

John Terry says a new contract for manager Jose Mourinho can lead to years of Chelsea supremacy in English football.

Reports that Mourinho was likely to extend his deal first emerged at the end of last season but it now appears he will officially commit to Stamford Bridge until 2019 before the Blues Premier League opener against Swansea on August 8.

And 34-year-old Terry, the club’s long-serving captain, says it means more silverware for the reigning champions of England.

“It’s great news for the club but terrible news for everybody else because the other managers know that he finds ways to beat teams, he knows people inside out, on and off the pitch,” the former England defender told the Evening Standard.

“Whether you’re a player or manager, he does his groundwork. He knows everything.

“The manager has a lot of great records against clubs and other managers. It must play on their minds.

“When other big teams sign big players you do think ‘oh’, but it must be the same for them when Mourinho signs his contract at the club. It’s excellent news for the squad because it brings stability to the club. The fans love him because of what he’s done.”

Terry has been a key player in both of Mourinho’s spells as Chelsea boss and he says the 52-year-old Portuguese offers stability and a voracious will to win which he says hasn’t diminished at all over the years.

“For the whole place, stability is key for us, which we missed over the previous five or six years he was away,” said Terry.

“On the first front I was delighted to have him back and now, secondly, I am delighted he will stay for a few more years. It’s stable here, it’s calm.

“He demands the very best from us on a daily basis which is why for me he is the best in the world by a long way.”
