  • No complacency: Maxwell.

Paris Saint-Germain Maxwell is confident but has urged caution as his side and opponents Lyon approach the Trophee des Champions in contrasting form.

While OL’s pre-season form has been so bad that coach Hubert Fournier has been warned he cannot treat today’s game as a friendly, PSG have been dominant in the International Champions Cup friendly tournament.

Laurent Blanc’s side beat Benfica, Fiorentina and Manchester United, with their only defeat coming on penalties against English champions Chelsea.

And Maxwell said: “It is very important to build confidence through our results and we have played against good teams who are competitive in Europe.

“The season is about to start and we are confident but we must also be sensible, because we know how difficult this match is against Lyon. They are a good team. We will have to give it our all to win.”

Lyon’s win over AC Milan is an outlier in a friendly campaign also featuring defeats to Sion, PSV Eindhoven, Villarreal and 6-0 to Arsenal.

That was enough for club president Jean-Michel Aulas to question whether Fournier – who along with several of his backroom staff has signed a new contract this summer – had made a mistake by giving his international players an extended break.

Defender Christophe Jallet said: “You never enjoy losing in your friendlies, and it also proves you have more to learn. But in football everything moves quickly.

“We have to concentrate on our first objective this season, winning the Trophee des Champions against a good PSG team.”

Lyon will be without suspended forward Nabil Fekir but their defence is boosted by the availability of Henri Bedimo, Jeremy Morel and Jallet himself, who had been suffering with a thigh problem.
