  • Julen Lopetegui.

Julen Lopetegui has signed a contract extension to remain as Spain coach for another two years.

The 51-year-old took charge in 2016 and his new deal ties him to La Roja until 2020, it was announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

Luis Rubiales, the new president of the Spanish football Federation (RFEF), said: “We were clear on this, we couldn’t allow Julen and his team to get away. The professional admiration and respect for him is huge.

“The work Lopetegui has done in these two years is brilliant.

“It took us five minutes to finalise things. It was very easy. It’s the best for the national team.”

Lopetegui replaced the hugely-successful Vicente del Bosque as Spain coach after Euro 2016 and has enjoyed an impressive start to life in the hotseat.

He has yet to taste defeat in his 18 matches in charge, recording 13 wins and five draws, and guided Spain to this summer’s World Cup finals with a 28-point haul from a possible 30 in their qualifying group.

Lopetegui said in quotes reported by AS: “I want to thank the Federation and the president for the confidence they’ve shown in me and the coaching team.

“To have this continuity is always good. Clearly we’re pleased.”

The former Porto boss added: “We arrived with the mentality of working hard, and we’ll continue with the mentality of working hard.

“We’re pleased with what we’ve done and we’re excited about what’s to come.”

Spain, the 2010 world champions and European Championship winners in 2008 and 2012, head to Russia next month as one of the favourites.

They face Portugal, Morocco and Iran in Group B.

Rubiales added of Lopetegui: “We have with him high hopes for the World Cup.

“We know that it’s difficult, but we have faith in Lopetegui’s wisdom and he’s done a fantastic job these two years.”
