  • Gareth Bale responded in style to his critics with a fine finish as Real Madrid got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Borja Mayoral rewarded a bright start by Real with his first Madrid goal before Sociedad’s Kevin Rodrigues scored at both ends to give the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead.

And Bale secured the three points as he sped past Rodrigues and dinked the ball over Geronimo Rulli for just his second goal of the season on the hour mark.

Here, we rate the players from both sides.

    REAL SOCIEDAD

    Rulli 5

Looked shaky throughout and maybe could have come off his line more quickly for Bale’s goal.

    Odriozola 7

The home team’s best player, enjoying a real tussle with Theo Hernandez and creating their only goal.

    Elustondo 5

Looked like a weak link in La Real’s defence all night and was beaten twice in the build-up to the second goal.

    Llorente 6

Solid enough apart from when he was beaten by Mayoral before the second goal, but fiercely argued he had been fouled.

    Rodrigues 6

A real mixed bag: scored, hit the crossbar, registered an own goal and was beaten by Bale for the third goal.

    Canales 5

Disappointing performance against his former club, offering little down the right before being replaced.

    Prieto 5

Unable to exert his usual influence in midfield as Madrid dominated the centre of the pitch.

    Illarramendi 6

As always, everything went through the former Madrid man, but he was occasionally overrun in midfield.

    Zurutuza 5

Like Prieto, he didn’t play to his usual standards and couldn’t help turn the game in his team’s favour.

    Januzaj 5

A few flashes of skill from the former Manchester United man, but precious little end product.

    Willian Jose 5

Received little service but was heavy-footed when he did get the ball and easily contained by Madrid’s back four.

    SUBSTITUTES

    Vela 6

His pace and direct running unsettled the Madrid defence, and would have been useful from the start.

    Juanmi 5

Little impact after appearing for the latter stages.

    Agirretxe 5

Brief run-out as he continues his return from long-term injury.

    REAL MADRID

    Navas 5

Absolute howler for La Real’s goal, which he really should have saved, but otherwise solid.

    Carvajal 6

Energetic as always but could have done more to close down Rodrigues for the hosts’ goal.

    Varane 7

Smooth and sleek in the centre of defence, getting back to his best after injury.

    Ramos 7

Typically rugged display from the skipper, who clearly had the upper hand over Willian Jose.

    Hernandez 7

Made several barnstorming attacking runs but occasionally vulnerable defensively.

    Modric 7

As smooth as ever, especially in the early stages when Madrid took quick control of the game.

    Casemiro 7

Made tackles, won loose balls, threatened from set-pieces and got booked: standard fare.

    Isco 7

Several touches of class and a perfect pass to set Bale on his way for the third goal.

    Bale 7

Worked hard in defence and scored a brilliant goal to secure the points.

    Mayoral 8

A revelation. Scored, assisted and fitted into the attack to surprising perfection.

    Asensio 7

Here, there and everywhere, always posing a threat in attack and having more shots than anyone else.

    SUBSTITUTES

    Vazquez 6

Ran hard to cover defence and attack after appearing for Mayoral.

    Ceballos and Nacho

Not enough time to significantly contribute.
