  • Extra special: Stephane Sessegnon opens the scoring for West Brom.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal claimed his side delivered their best performance of the season, despite needing an 88th minute equaliser from Daley Blind to draw 2-2 at West Brom last night.

United dominated possession for long spells but West Brom could have argued they were the better side going forward as they twice led, first through Stephane Sessegnon and then Saido Berahino in the 66th minute.

Marouane Fellaini – a half-time substitute – had cancelled out the first with a brilliant finish but it was Blind who broke Baggies hearts with his low strike salvaging a point for van Gaal’s side.

Van Gaal said: “I’m very disappointed because we played our best match of the season and the result is not good enough.

“We could have won but that does not count in our world, but I also have to be happy because we created lots of chances and West Brom only had two chances. We gave it away which is a pity because we could have had a new start if we had won today.

“There were individual errors and they were forced because West Brom were playing more narrow in midfield and we had to push up, I have to look back at the goals because it is difficult from the bench. Maybe our lateral defenders have to close the space more.”

While the result was disappointing for the hosts, it was yet another goal for England Under-21 international Berahino who is up to six in the league already this season.

“I felt like I was focused and when that chance came I backed myself to take it and I was happy it went in today,” the 21-year-old said.

“I’m just enjoying my football, letting my football do the talking. If the goals keep coming that’s great that I’m contributing to the team.”
