  • Derby will miss the goals of Harry Wilson.

Manchester United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Derby, losing 8-7 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the third-round match.

Juan Mata opened the scoring in the third minute but a sensational free-kick from Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson restored parity on the hour mark.

The youngster was involved again as Sergio Romero was sent off for handling the ball outside the box less than 10 minutes later.

Jack Marriott appeared to grab the winner for the visitors with five minutes to play but substitute Marouane Fellaini popped up with a stoppage-time equaliser to take the contest to penalties.

After 16 penalties, the away side emerged victorious when Phil Jones’ effort was saved by Scott Carson.

    30-SECOND REPORT

Frank Lampard set his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Wilson operating from the left flank. The Wales international showed good pace and endeavour down his side and ensured United’s young right-back Diogo Dalot was tested.

Apart from scoring a scorcher with his free-kick, Wilson also offered a threat in behind while his sharp-shooting was always a danger.

The youngster used his pace and movement to good effect as United were caught up the pitch. Having gone clean through, he attempted to prod it past the advancing Romero who handled the ball outside the area and was subsequently sent-off.

Wilson also executed a fine dummy in the build up for the winner, allowing it to run through for Mason Mount whose effort was saved by Lee Grant only for Marriott to score the rebound.

    GOT RIGHT

Shooting – Of course, his unbelievable free-kick comes into this. The effort from range was of the world class variety, one the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo would’ve been proud of. Striking it with his laces, the ball dipped and swerved into the far corner from 35 yards out. He also forced a superb save from Romero who tipped his effort around the post.

Passing – Wilson made two key passes during his excellent display but his dummy leading up to the winner was intelligent and effective as well. The 21-year-old always looked likely to create an opening with his passing in the final third.

    GOT WRONG

Tracking back – It’s no coincidence that both United goals came from the right flank. Craig Forsyth was afforded little support from Wilson. First, a sweeping move saw Mata arrive unmarked on the far side to curl in a low finish. Then, with Derby seconds away from victory in normal time, Dalot was allowed to cross from the right unimpeded as Fellaini powered home his header at the far post.

A night to remember: Harry Wilson.

    VERDICT

Man of the match in this one. There’s plenty of scope for improvement but Wilson showed his outstanding quality, particularly with that left foot.
