  • Dani Ceballos is not developing at Real Madrid due to a lack of game time, according to Quique Setien – who would gladly have him back at Real Betis.

The midfielder was named player of the tournament at the European Under-21 Championship and Real added them to their ranks at a cost of just 18 million euros from Betis.

But the 21-year-old, who had played more than 100 games in his former club’s first-team, has made it onto the pitch just 16 times for Los Blancos so far this year.

That includes a mere five starts, even though the likes of Toni Kroos and Casemiro have struggled to replicate the form that helped Real to a La Liga and Champions League double last term.

Ceballos never played under Setien at Betis, but the new man in charge at Estadio Benito Villamarin has questioned whether the Spanish starlet is truly happy with his current situation.

“I don’t think it would have hurt for Betis to loan Ceballos for a year,” Setien told El Larguero.

“All players, and even more so at such an early age, should play or search for places where they can play.

“It is a pity when these players, with the talent they have, can’t develop.

“He can be [happy], because he knows he’s part of team that is one of the best in the world.

“But when the days pass and he doesn’t play, he can be happy, but also not at all.

“I understand that he said he is happy in Madrid, which he surely is. Then there is another factor, which is whether he plays or not.”
