New man: Julen Lopetegui

Real Madrid will unveil Julen Lopetegui as their new manager at 21:00 UAE time this evening, a day after he was sacked as Spain’s head coach.

The 51-year-old was dismissed just two days before the nation’s World Cup opener against Portugal after it emerged he was to replace Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

A statement issued on the club’s official website, www.realmadrid.com, said: “Real Madrid CF will present Julen Lopetegui as the new first team manager today, Thursday June 14. The act will take place at 7:00 pm CEST at the Santiago Bernabeu presidential box.”

It is being claimed that Julen Lopetegui could sensationally be sacked by Spain on the eve of the 2018 World Cup – with Tuesday’s announcement of him agreeing to take over as Real Madrid coach believed to be the underlying reason.

Multiple reports on Tuesday night claimed Spanish FA (RFEF) and in particular the federation’s new president, Luis Rubiales, felt ‘betrayed’ by Lopetegui’s decision and was angered to only find out five minutes before Madrid announced the hire.

The Independent claims that Rubiales and the RFEF are set to act, with an emergency press conference being hastily arranged for Wednesday.
