  • Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was keen to emphasise the strength of the squad in a summer which has seen manager Zinedine Zidane and star player Cristiano Ronaldo depart the club.

Speaking at the presentation of new signing Alvaro Odriozola, Perez said: “We have a great squad that is going to be reinforced with fantastic players.

“Alvaro was clear about where he wanted to play. He will never forget that Real Madrid never gives up and here we want you to be happy.

“This is the dream and the great challenge of your career, thank you for choosing us.”

The departures of both Zidane and Ronaldo came as shocks to the club and its fanbase, but Perez insisted that there will be no drop in standards for a side which has won the Champions League a record three times in a row.

“No one believed that we would be able to win another Champions League,” he continued.

“We are the only club to win the European Cup in football and basketball in the same year.

“The challenge is remaining loyal to our identity and seeking success because we have impeccable solidity as an institution.

“Our successes have been thanks to the team spirit and our values, and we are aware of the level of demand we have.

“Real Madrid always want more and each title is the first step towards the next.”
