  • Marcelo is the latest footballer to settle a case with Spain's tax authorities.

Real Madrid left-back Marcelo has become the latest footballer playing in Spain to settle a tax case with the country’s authorities.

The Brazilian will pay just over €750,000 as a fine, while also accepting a four-month suspended prison sentence, after being accused of evading a €1million tax payment over a disputed image rights transfer. However, he will not actually serve any of that sentence, as Spanish law allows for a sentence of less than two years to be served under probation.

Marcelo’s case comes after Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, and Angel di Maria have all been pulled up by Spanish prosecutors over alleged tax evasion, with Ronaldo agreeing a settlement after moving to Juventus this summer.

Current Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, who managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, also had a run-in with Spain’s tax authorities.
