Los Blancos legend Sergio Ramos is a man loved and hated in equal measure – and like his former teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, the defender made the news for all the wrong reasons this week.
After being shown a yellow card in the 23rd minute of Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Roma for a foul on Steven N’Zonzi, Ramos became the most booked player in the history of the Champions League with 37 bookings.
He takes the title from former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes.
But at least it wasn’t as bad as Ronaldo who was shown a straight red, albeit harshly, for his new club Juventus against Valencia.
Despite Ramos’ record breaking effort goals from Isco, Gareth Bale and Mariano Diaz secured an easy victory for the Spanish giants in their opening Group G game.
Ramos’ no-nonsense style of defending has made him quite unpopular, particularly with Liverpool fans, after his challenge on Mohamed Salah in last season’s Champions League final.
The Spanish defender is also the most sent off player in the history of La Liga, a record he set in December 2017.
Twitter has of course gone into meltdown. Here are some of the high/lowlights:
