Alexis Sanchez is almost certain to stay at Arsenal despite suggestions earlier in the week and even on Thursday, transfer deadline day, that the Chilean forward would be granted his wish to leave the club.
Arsenal were only willing to sell Sanchez, who was the subject of two bids from Manchester City, if they were able to find a replacement, with Monaco’s Thomas Lemar the first preference.
The Gunners were ready to meet Monaco’s €100 million asking price, with a bid of that value said to have been accepted by the French club.
However, with the bid coming so late on deadline day, it’s likely that Arsenal don’t have the time to agree terms with Lemar in order to complete the transfer.
The player is in France’s squad for the national team’s game against Holland later on Thursday, making negotiating a contract and completing a medical difficult.
Lemar reportedly would prefer a move to Liverpool in any case.
With the Lemar transfer looking nearly impossible, Sanchez will not be allowed to leave this summer.
Borussia Dortmund have signed highly-rated England youth international Jadon Sancho from Manchester City, the Bundesliga club have announced.
Press Association Sport understands the German club have paid around £8 million for the 17-year-old in a deal which also guarantees City will receive a substantial sell-on clause should he move on again.
The winger has been tempted to move by the prospect of first-team football in Germany and will wear the number seven shirt recently vacated by Ousmane Dembele at Dortmund.
Sancho was one of the star players during the recent Under-17 European Championship, in which England finished runners-up, and had attracted interest from Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham.
City had hoped to persuade their Academy product to stay but he turned down the offer of a new contract.
Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc told the club’s website, www.bvb.de: “We are very pleased that Jadon Sancho, who is currently one of the greatest talents in European football, will definitely play at BVB.
“We are convinced that we can help this very young player continue to develop his game and become a real asset for our team.”

Tottenham are close to completing the transfer of Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes on a season-long loan deal.
Reports in England claim that the Portuguese international will join the Serge Aurier and Davinson Sanchez as the clubs’ summer recruits.
Gomes was signed from Valencia with Barcelona shelling out £37 million to bring him to the Camp Nou.
Tottenham will be obligated to spend £40 million to make the move permanent next summer.
Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino remains hopeful of securing the signature of Fernando Llorente from Swansea City before the end of the transfer deadline.
