ROY HODGSON turned down two megabucks deals from the Chinese Super League because he wanted a chance to prove himself again on home turf, the Daily Mirror reports.

The former England manager, 70, now has the opportunity to put humiliation at Euro 2016 behind him – should he dig boyhood club Crystal Palace out of trouble.

AWOL Chelsea striker DIEGO COSTA hopes his return to Atletico Madrid will be finalised by the end of the week, according to the Daily Mail.

The two clubs have been thrashing out a £53million agreement thought to include a revised proposal of £40million, £9 million in add-ons and a £4million bonus for the 28-year-old’s early release.

Injury-afflicted Manchester City captain VINCENT KOMPANY is the master of his own destiny at the club, boss Pep Guardiola has said.

The manager expects Kompany to return to the Etihad Stadium once over a calf injury, but his long-term future is in his hands.

“Vincent before I came was two years injured. After we discovered what he had he made a good rehabilitation. He has a contract, it depends on him”, Guardiola said in comments reported by Sky Sports News.

Arsenal may have to say goodbye to MESUT OZIL when his contract expires next summer, The Sun reports.

No talks over a new deal have taken place since negotiations collapsed in February amid questions over manager Arsene Wenger’s future.

Bought from Real Madrid for £42million in 2013, the newspaper understands the Gunners have offered the 28-year-old £8.1million-a-year to stay.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder WILLIAM CARVALHO still fancies a move to West Ham despite relations between the two clubs being in the doldrums, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Irons’ record bid for the 25-year-old collapsed after the Portugal side rejected their £36 million offer.

Arsenal bound? Karim Benzema

The transfer window may not open again until January 1 2018 but that hasn’t put an end to plenty of speculation throughout Europe.

Here, we take a look at three big stories dominating the headlines.

Do you think any of these deals will get over the line in January?

KARIM BENZEMA

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has started planning a serious attacking overhaul at the Bernabeu.

According to the Daily Star, Perez is willing to sell Benzema and Gareth Bale to finance a move for Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Paulo Dybala.

If Benzema is to leave, Arsenal will emerge as front runners to secure the Frenchman’s signature.

RATING: 5/10

SPORT360 VERDICT

Benzema had an average season in 2016-17 by his standards and as his 30s approach this is arguably Real’s best time to sell up. Plenty of parties will be interested in taking the Frenchman with the Gunners said to be chief among them but it will all come down to the money.

However, Benzema has repeatedly proven his value to Madrid and manager Zinedine Zidane has faith in him, so a move away from the Spanish capital is not as simple as it sounds.

MESUT OZIL

Ozil is set to leave Arsenal next summer and will not sign a new contract, according to the Sun.

The 28-year-old has not spoken with club officials about a new contract since negotiations broke down back in February.

Since Wenger signed a new deal back in May, the club have not pushed for Ozil to commit his future at the Emirates Stadium, which puts his future on high alert.

RATING: 6/10

SPORT360 VERDICT

With Barcelona and Bayern Munich taking a close interest in Ozil’s negotiations, it remains to be seen what the next step is for the German international if he leaves North London.

His body language and form has dipped in recent weeks and this hasn’t helped his teammates – as it comes at a time when they need his leadership the most.

Schurrle could have returned to the Premier League.

West Ham United missed out on the chance of acquiring the services of former Chelsea star Andre Schurrle on transfer deadline day, according to The Sun.

The German international was keen to return to the Premier League after spending two years in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and now Borussia Dortmund.

West Ham were given the chance to sign the 26-year-old on a loan deal with a clause to buy him at the end of the season for £26m, a day before deadline day.

However, the Hammers were caught up in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, and Schurrle was neglected amidst the chaos.

Later, their bid to sign Carvalho was rejected too.

Up until now, Schurrle hasn’t had much of an impact at Dortmund under Thomas Tuchel, with his time at the Westfalenstadion being blighted by injuries.
