MAN UNITED TRYING TO FORCE THROUGH SERI DEAL

The Sun claims that Manchester United are looking to wrap up a deal for Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri. The Ivorian was a summer target for Barcelona before the move fell through, and has recently been strongly linked with Manchester City. However, United manager Jose Mourinho wants his club to finalise an agreement for either an immediate transfer or for the upcoming summer window.

    RATING: 6/10

    VERDICT

Having completed a move for Sanchez, it seems Mourinho is quickly abandoning his usual position on the January window by looking to sign a second player this month. Seri will add craft and guile to the United midfield, which is set to be depleted this summer; Marouane Fellaini hasn’t signed a new contract and Michael Carrick will join the club’s coaching staff at the end of the year, leaving Ander Herrera and academy product Scott McTominay as the only cover for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

PSG, REAL MADRID TO FIGHT OVER CHELSEA’S COURTOIS

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has yet to agree a new contract at the club, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by some of Europe’s leading clubs. Belgian publication Het Laatse Nieuws reports that PSG and Real Madrid are ready to battle for the Blues’ No. 1’s services.

    RATING: 7/10

    VERDICT

While it seemed like contract negotiations with Courtois had got to the point where only the formality of putting pen to paper was left, the fact that it hasn’t happened will surely be worrying the Stamford Bridge club, especially given the stature of the clubs looking to take him off their hands. If Courtois is refusing to sign a new contract, with his current one set to expire at the end of next season, and either Madrid or PSG comes in with a big offer, Chelsea may be better off cashing in when his value is at its peak. Madrid are the more likely destination if he does leave, given their desperate search for a keeper in the last three years.

LEVERKUSEN TO WARD OFF BAILEY SUITORS

According to Bild, Bayer Leverkusen will hold onto highly-rated forward Leon Bailey for as long as possible. The 20-year-old has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal this month, but Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has said staying at the Bundesliga club will a better option for the player’s development.

    RATING: 5/10

    VERDICT

Voller may be right in saying Bailey would be better off developing at Leverkusen for a while before making a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, but if any of those clubs come calling, it’s hard to see the German side resisting too much. Ultimately, Leverkusen know they will have to cash in on the Jamaican, and although his current contract only expires in 2022, a big-money bid will be impossible for the club to ignore.
